Laurence J. Tynan Battleship Oregon Naval Post No. 1478 memorabilia
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of several items relating to Laurence J. Tynan's membership in Battleship Oregon Naval Post No. 1478 of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Portland, Oregon. These items include two membership cards for the post from 1931 and 1933, and an August 24, 1933, letter to Tynan from Louis J. Gulliver of the U.S. Frigate Constitution. The letter thanks Tynan for having donated a piece of the Battleship Oregon's "Homeward Bound" pennant to the Constitution. The collection also includes a small, red segment of the "Homeward Bound" pennant, which was stapled to Gulliver's letter at the time the collection was donated to the Oregon Historical Society.

Biographical Note
Laurence Jackson Tynan (sometimes written as Lawrence) was born in 1898, and came to Portland, Oregon, about 1910. He enlisted in the Oregon naval reserve in 1916, and during World War I, he served on the U.S.S. South Dakota. After the war, he worked as a service manager for Westinghouse Electric. He was a member of Battleship Oregon Naval Post No. 1478 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.), serving as the post's captain in the early 1930s. He died in 1965.

Collection was processed by Jeffrey A. Hayes in May 2026. Processing included unstapling the piece of the Battleship Oregon Homeward Bound pennant from the Louis J. Gulliver letter and placing it in an archival envelope for preservation purposes.
