Abstract

Pay records of the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry regiment, including payrolls for companies and field staff, and individual soldiers' pay records. The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry was raised during the Spanish-American War and served in the Philippines during that conflict and for the first four months of the subsequent Philippine-American War.

The collection consists primarily of letters written by Henry Larcom Abbot (1831-1927) to his parents in 1855, journals he kept during his work on the Pacific Railroad Survey in California and Oregon in 1855-1856, and various field notes and celestial observations he took for the survey.

Typescript copies of letters written by Mary J. Allen (1836-1893), her husband H. A. Allen (1818-1882), and her stepsons Anson G. Allen (1849-1891) and Carleton B. Allen (1858-1924). The letters describe life at military posts in Washington state and Alaska. The collection also includes an introductory biographical sketch of H. A. Allen and historical information about San Juan Island, Washington.
