Edward S. West papers

 Collection
Identifier: Coll 1137

Scope and Contents

Papers of Edward S. West, a biochemistry professor in Portland, Oregon, consisting primarily of photographs and correspondence to West. Many of the letters in the collection are from West's former student Lawrence H. Tyler; most of these date from the period when Tyler was serving in the U.S. Marines during World War II and the Korean War. There are also letters and cards to West from other former students and family members during World War II, including Japanese Americans Toshi Kuge, Abe Oyamada, and Paul Yamada. Oyamada's letter explains his motivations for enlisting in the U.S. Army. Other correspondence includes a letter about West's appointment to the biochemistry department at the University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health & Science University) in Portland; a letter from his mother; and letters about textbooks that West wrote. Photographs in the collection consist of five albums and a small number of loose prints. Many of the photographs depict West's travels with his family in Oregon and elsewhere in the United States and Canada. A few photographs in one album show destruction from the 1948 Vanport flood. Along with the photographs and correspondence, the collection includes a booklet about the Oregon Primate Research Center, where West worked.
