Ted Hallock family papers

 Collection
Identifier: Coll 1129

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the papers of Oregon radio host and legislator Ted Hallock and his family. Most of Ted Hallock's papers predate his time as an Oregon state senator, and include materials relating to his military service during World War II. Military papers include discharge papers from both the U.S. Army and the National Guard; combat service records; Hallock's reminiscences of his bombing missions, written shortly after his 30th mission; the August 1944 issue of the New Yorker magazine, with a profile of Hallock; a 1967 issue of Old Oregon with a profile of World War II veterans including Hallock; a map marking the routes of Hallock's bombing missions; and group photographs including Hallock. Other Ted Hallock papers in the collection include letters to his family while he was at the University of Oregon; correspondence and awards from his career in radio; clippings and photographs; and a publication relating to a 1956 trip to the Soviet Union he participated in. The collection also includes the text of an Oregon Senate resolution memorializing Hallock after his death, and obituaries for him and for his third wife, Jackie Hallock.

Family papers consist of contents from a family album; a scrapbook compiled by Ted Hallock's father, Joseph H. Hallock; and genealogical research. The album materials consist of photographs, including of Ted Hallock, as well as clippings, correspondence, programs, and ephemera. Some of these materials reflect Joseph H. Hallock's career in radio. The scrapbook consists of photographs; clippings, primarily of words or phrases cut from newspapers or magazines and included either for context or for humor; and signatures, programs, correspondence, and ephemera. Some of these materials relate to Joseph H. Hallock's time at the Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) and his travels during the 1910s. The genealogical research focuses on Homer Humphrey Hallock, Joseph H. Hallock, Oliver Humphrey Hallock, Hannah Elizabeth Mallory, and Mary Peninger Hallock.

Biographical Note

Joseph Theodore Hallock, known in his life as Ted Hallock, was born in 1921 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Joseph Homer Hallock (1891-1976) and Mary Peninger Hallock (1892-1975). When Ted Hallock was six years old, his family moved to Portland, Oregon, where his father built the city's first commercial radio station. Ted Hallock studied at the University of Oregon in Eugene, but left to join the Army Air Corps after the United States entered World War II. He served on 31 bombing missions in the European theater, and he was profiled in an August 1944 issue of the New Yorker magazine. After the war, he returned to the University of Oregon and switched his major from law to journalism. Hallock subsequently worked for several radio stations in Portland, and won a Peabody Award for local programming. In 1957, he was appointed state coordinator for the Oregon Centennial Commission. In 1962, he was elected to the Oregon Senate. He served five terms, and was a staunch supporter of environmental and land use legislation, including Senate Bill 100 in 1973.

Hallock was married three times: First to Muriel Meier (later Muriel Sinclair, 1921-1999); then to Phyllis Natwick (1919-2001), with whom he had two children; and finally to Jacklyn Louise "Jackie" Hull (1940-2019). Ted Hallock died in December 2006.
