Photocopy manuscript letters from Henry Elsing to his sister Mary, dated August 27 and September 11, 1887, written while he was traveling in the West, where he accepted an offer to teach at a school at the Vancouver Barracks, Washington Territory. Collection also includes a photocopy extract from "The Era," Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, dated December 6, 1893, regarding his recent settlement in the area and his professional background.

Biographical note

Per note in collection: Henry Elsing (1863-1923) began studying medicine at the Vancouver Barracks, Washington Territory, under Col. Basil Norris, Surgeon and Medical Director of the U. S. Army. Later, he secured an appointment to the First Surgical Division of the Bellevue Hospital, Washington, but soon left to work at the Harlem Hospital in New York.
