Henry Allyn diary and cartes-de-visite
Original and typescript copy of a diary that Henry Allyn (1794-1880) wrote during his overland journey to Oregon, and three cartes-de-visite photographs of Allyn and his family. Allyn emigrated to Oregon in 1853.
John Ball papers
Papers of John Ball (1794-1884), including ones relating to his meteorological and geological observations of the Northwest, and correspondence of his daughters with others about Ball and his papers. Ball accompanied Nathaniel J. Wyeth's 1832 expedition to Oregon, worked as a teacher for John McLoughlin, and briefly farmed in French Prairie before returning to the eastern United States in late 1833.
Samuel A. and Harriet T. Clarke papers
Papers of Samuel A. Clarke (1827-1909) and Harriet T. Clarke (1832-1890), including diaries, correspondence, writings, and genealogical materials. Samuel A. Clarke came to Oregon in 1850, and worked in the newspaper industry. In 1852, he married Harriet Talcott Buckingham, who had come to Oregon in 1851.
Medorem and John D. Crawford papers
Papers of and relating to Medorem Crawford (1819-1891) and his brother John D. Crawford (1824-1877). Medorem Crawford emigrated to Oregon in 1842, held a number of political offices, and commanded military escorts for emigrants to Oregon during the U.S. Civil War. John D. Crawford emigrated to Oregon in 1847, served as a commissary officer during the Cayuse War, and worked in the mercantile business in Champoeg, Oregon, in the 1850s.
Henry Elsing letters
Photocopy manuscript letters from Henry Elsing to his sister Mary, dated August 27 and September 11, 1887, written while he was traveling in the West, where he accepted an offer to teach at a school at the Vancouver Barracks, Washington Territory.
A. B. Harden diary and letters
Diary of A. B. Harden (1814-1887), who emigrated to Oregon in 1847, and letters to his family. The diary describes Harden's journey to Oregon and his life in Oregon, while the letters include information about life in Oregon, developments in the war between Euro-American emigrants and Liksiyu (Cayuse) people, names of local legislators, and poetry by Harden.
