Henry Allyn diary and cartes-de-visite

Abstract

Original and typescript copy of a diary that Henry Allyn (1794-1880) wrote during his overland journey to Oregon, and three cartes-de-visite photographs of Allyn and his family. Allyn emigrated to Oregon in 1853.

John Ball papers

Abstract

Papers of John Ball (1794-1884), including ones relating to his meteorological and geological observations of the Northwest, and correspondence of his daughters with others about Ball and his papers. Ball accompanied Nathaniel J. Wyeth's 1832 expedition to Oregon, worked as a teacher for John McLoughlin, and briefly farmed in French Prairie before returning to the eastern United States in late 1833.

This artificial collection consists of cartes-de-visite photographs donated to the Oregon Historical Society prior to 2010. It includes portraits taken from about 1855 through the early 1900s. Papers of Samuel A. Clarke (1827-1909) and Harriet T. Clarke (1832-1890), including diaries, correspondence, writings, and genealogical materials. Samuel A. Clarke came to Oregon in 1850, and worked in the newspaper industry. In 1852, he married Harriet Talcott Buckingham, who had come to Oregon in 1851.

Cornell family papers

Papers of the Cornell family and related families, including family correspondence; letters from Bertrand Cornell (died 1852) describing his journey to Oregon; and letters and newspaper articles by Wilbur F. Cornell (1841-1911) describing Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Methodist minister William Cornell (1812-1891) and his cousin Bertrand Cornell emigrated to Oregon in 1852; Bertrand died soon after the journey. William Cornell brought his family to Oregon in 1854.

Medorem and John D. Crawford papers

Abstract

Papers of and relating to Medorem Crawford (1819-1891) and his brother John D. Crawford (1824-1877). Medorem Crawford emigrated to Oregon in 1842, held a number of political offices, and commanded military escorts for emigrants to Oregon during the U.S. Civil War. John D. Crawford emigrated to Oregon in 1847, served as a commissary officer during the Cayuse War, and worked in the mercantile business in Champoeg, Oregon, in the 1850s.
