Original and typescript of Henry E. Hayes' diary, which covers his time gold mining near Nevada City, California, his coming to Oregon in 1851, and his activities making shingles in Clackamas County. Hayes (1831-1919), who was born in Hartford, Connecticut, eventually became a steamboat pilot, and had a farm at Stafford, Oregon.

Lyman (1815-1887) was a congregational clergyman and teacher. He founded the First Congregational Church, Portland, Oregon, in 1851.
