Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 40 black and white photographic prints, 2 postcards, 37 glass lantern slides, 5 glass negatives and 1 nitrate negative taken or collected by Herbert A. Maddock. Most of the photographic prints and negatives are snapshots of the Maddock family and other residential and street scenes in Oregon and California. Other subjects represented include the Portland Crematorium, the Enterprise Slide Company offices, and students from the Oregon State Normal School in Monmouth, Oregon. Also included in the collection are 11 black and white photographs that document damage from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; four of these photographs are signed by A. Blumberg.

The majority of the glass lantern slides in the collection were produced by Enterprise Slide Company. Most of the slides are local and national advertisements, scenic street and landscape scenes, and educational subjects.

Biographical Note

Herbert A. Maddock (1869-1930) was a Portland, Oregon, based photographer and manufacturer of art slides. He was born in Decatur, Illinois. At the age of 18, he moved to San Francisco, California, where he lived briefly before settling in Portland in the 1890s. Maddock worked for many years as the owner and manager of the Enterprise Slide Company, which produced educational, art, and marketing glass lantern slides.
