Abstract

Photograph of Fort Walla Walla, taken on May 1, 1859. The photograph was originally owned and may have been taken by Frederick Tracy Dent (1820-1892). Dent served as captain of the 9th United States Infantry at Fort Walla Walla. In 1859, Fort Walla Walla was a cavalry outpost for the United States military located in the Washington Territory, now Washington State.

Abstract

Papers of Dwight E. Gard (1909-1971) include a notebook he kept while he was held as a prisoner of war by Japanese forces during World War II, along with related correspondence and articles, and materials relating to Multnomah Bank, the bank he later founded in Portland, Oregon. These include newspaper clippings, reports of condition, and a small quantity of advertisements, photographs, and blank checks and stationery.

Frank S. Godfrey was a businessman in Seaside, Oregon, and a soldier in the Spanish-American War, master sergeant of Company B, 2nd Oregon Infantry. Collection includes correspondence of Birdie Ann Godfrey, 1957; ribbons and other ephemera from United States War Veterans reunions, 1898-1955; register of veterans, 1951; and Dorothy Godfrey Otto's reminiscences, 1967.

A scrapbook kept by Grace Howard Gray (1857-1949) to document family history and historic events, including mementos, drawings and ephemera collected during her lifetime. The scrapbook contains items related to the life of General O. O. Howard (1830-1909), Gray's father, and drawings by Guy Howard (1855-1899), her brother, and Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944). Additional materials were added to the scrapbook by other family members.
