Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one photograph of Fort Walla Walla, taken May 1, 1859. The photograph was originally owned and may have been taken by Frederick Tracy Dent. This photograph depicts the fort's fourth location, which was constructed between 1857 and 1858, and shows many of the fort's buildings.

Historical Note

Fort Walla Walla was a cavalry outpost for the United States military located in the Washington Territory (now Washington State). The fort was established in 1856; its exact location changed several times.

Biographical Note

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Frederick Tracy Dent (1820-1892) served as a career military officer for the United States Army, and was captain of the 9th United States Infantry at Fort Walla Walla from approximately 1859 to 1860. Dent participated in the Spokane and Yakima expeditions, and engaged in the battles of Four Lakes and Spokane Plains during the Yakima War. Dent was brother-in-law to Ulysses S. Grant and served as a military secretary for President Grant from 1869 to 1873.
