George H. Bailey photographs
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of 12 photographs, correspondence, and ephemera that belonged to Portland, Oregon, police officer George H. Bailey. The photographs depict scenes from the 1910 Labor Day parade and unrest related to a Teamsters' union strike, and Columbus Day and St. Patrick’s Day parades in 1911. Also included are one black-and-white portrait of Bailey in his police captain's uniform, one black-and-white portrait of Bailey’s wife, Flora, and one color snapshot of Bailey shaking hands with a man dressed as Santa Claus, taken around the 1960s.
The correspondence in the collection consists of letters to Bailey from Charles H. Hunt, chief of police, in 1905, describing Bailey's role as police captain, and letters to Bailey from friends and associates regarding his corruption charges and trial from 1909 to 1913. Ephemera includes a 1932 newspaper clipping about an automobile accident Bailey was in, and a 1967 memorial program commemorating Bailey's life.

Biographical Note
George H. Bailey (1866-1967) worked as a Portland police officer from 1896 until his dismissal due to allegations of corruption in 1912. He then worked as a guard at the United States National Bank until his retirement.
