Scope and Contents

The collection consists of materials from and relating to the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments, both of which were held in the United States and included matches in Portland, Oregon. The majority of materials relate to the 1999 tournament. These consists of a program; two brochures; tickets for the Round 1 matches played in Portland on June 23 and June 24; a pocket folder; the cover and selected pages from the July 19, 1999, issue of Newsweek covering the tournament final; and the December 20, 1999, issue of Sports Illustrated featuring the U.S. team on the cover. The memorabilia from the 2003 tournament consists of the tournament's program, which was autographed by members of the U.S. team.

Historical Note

The 1999 and 2003 FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Women's World Cup tournaments were held in the United States, and included matches played at the Civic Stadium (later PGE Park, now Providence Park) in Portland, Oregon. In 1999, four Round 1 matches were held at the Civic Stadium: Japan versus Russia and China versus Ghana on June 23; Denmark versus North Korea and Germany versus Mexico on June 24. In those matches, Russia beat Japan 5-0, China beat Ghana 7-0, North Korea beat Denmark 3-1, and Germany beat Mexico 6-0. The United States later won the tournament's final in Pasadena, California.

In 2003, Portland's PGE park hosted two Round 1 matches on September 28, the quarterfinals on October 2, and the semifinals on October 5. In the Round 1 matches, Ghana beat Australia 2-1, while China beat Russia 1-0. In the quarterfinals, Canada beat China 1-0, while Germany beat Russia 7-1. The United States lost its semifinal game to Germany 3-0, while Sweden won against Canada 2-1. Germany won the final match in Carson, California.
