Biographical note

Captain James M. Gilman was a landowner in Portland, Oregon, and a partner in the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. He was born in New Hampshire in 1826 and came by ship to California in 1849. He worked on board a number of vessels in the Bay Area before coming to Oregon in 1850s. In Oregon, he served as the captain of several ships before becoming involved with the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. He invested his earnings in Portland and Astoria real estate, which proved highly profitable.
