The collection consists of materials related to William Francis (W. F.) Trimble, his family, and his grandson William Raleigh Trimble. The papers of W. F. Trimble consist of a book in which he transcribed letters he has sent, and wrote his thoughts concerning the American Civil War and its aftermath, as well as his views about topics such as history, religion, genealogy, and his decision to come to Oregon. The book also contains a photograph of Trimble and newspaper clippings about him and his family, mostly added following his death. William R. Trimble's papers consist of correspondence concerning a gift made in his honor to Loyola University, a 1979 article about Trimble being named Loyola's Teacher of the Year, and his obituary. The collection also includes photocopied biographical entries about William F. Trimble, his son William A. Trimble, and his father-in-law, Patrick Raleigh.

Biographical note

William Francis Trimble, known as W. F. Trimble, was born in 1830 and grew up in Fleming County, Kentucky, where he studied and practiced law. He came to Portland, Oregon in October 1864, where he worked as a lawyer and judge. While in Oregon, he converted to Catholicism. In 1871, he married Caroline Raleigh, with whom he had four children. He died in 1888 after a lengthy illness.

William Raleigh Trimble was born in 1913 in Portland, Oregon, the son of William A. Trimble and grandson of W. F. Trimble. After teaching in public high schools and at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, he was a professor at Loyola University in Chicago from 1955 to 1980. He specialized in English history. In 1964, he published a book, "The Catholic Laity in Elizabethan England, 1558-1603." Following his retirement, he returned to Portland, where he died in 2002.
