Entries in a journal begun by David S. Hoyt to record "observations on an expedition through Oregon and Washington territories and the Rocky Mountains for the exploration of the Northern Route for the Pacific Rail Road in the Summer and Autumn of 1853." The journal consists only of several pages of entries dated from June 22, 1853, to June 27, 1853; the remainder of the book is blank. The entries describe Hoyt's journey by ship from San Francisco, California, up the Pacific Coast and the Columbia River to Vancouver, Washington. They describe his impressions of the landscape and settlements on the trip, including Astoria, Oregon, and Fort Vancouver.
