Hoyt to record "observations on an expedition through Oregon and Washington territories and the Rocky Mountains for the exploration of the Northern Route for the Pacific Rail Road in the Summer and Autumn of 1853." The journal consists only of several pages of entries dated from June 22, 1853, to June 27, 1853.
