Biographical note

Robert Valentine Short (1823-1908) was a surveyor and legislator. He was a pioneer of 1847 and a friend of Joel Palmer and Joseph Lane. He was a member of the 1851 Constitutional Convention and in 1888 was elected to the Oregon Legislature from Clackamas County. He was apprenticed as a tailor and opened a shop in Oregon City in 1847. He also studied surveying and was responsible for surveying the town of Portland in 1850. He participated in the Indian Wars as a militia leader and mined for gold in California. He married Mary Geer in February 1848, and they had six children.
