Robert Valentine Short (1823-1908) was a pioneer of 1847. He was a member of the 1851 Constitutional Convention and in 1888 was elected to the Oregon Legislature from Clackamas County. He also studied surveying and was responsible for surveying the town of Portland in 1850. Collection includes diaries, correspondence, scrapbook, survey and field notes; and papers relating to donation land claims and property in Yamhill, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties.

Certificate made out to Joseph Simon (1851-1935) for 160 acres of land in Washington County, Oregon, and a receipt that said certificate was received by the recorder of conveyances of Washington County. Joseph Simon was an Oregon attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from 1898 to 1903.

Includes extensive correspondence relating to land claims, real estate controversies, and tax delinquencies, as well as correspondence and financial documents relating to the Library Association of Portland, the Multnomah Law Library, the Portland Free Kindergarten Association, the Oregon Historical Society, and other organizations and business concerns. Also includes ephemera and personal financial documents.

Collection includes typescript correspondence and reports, 1899; a typescript release of mortgage by George H. Williams, 1899; and a manuscript report by J. S. Polhemus, 1898, on improving the Columbia River between Vancouver, Washington, and the mouth of the Willamette River.
