Administrative History

The Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation (sometimes referred to as the Oregon Shipbuilding Company) was the largest of three shipyards that Henry J. Kaiser established in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, during World War II. It opened in 1941, and was located on the Willamette River northwest of the St. Johns neighborhood. The company's manager was Albert Bauer (1900-1993). During the war, Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation built more than 450 Liberty ships, Victory ships, and attack transports. Many of the company's employees lived in the city of Vanport, which was constructed at the northern edge of Portland to house workers. The firm also opened an onsite day care center, called the Child Service Centers, which cared for over 4,000 children. Operations at all three Kaiser shipyards ended shortly after the end of World War II.
