The account concerns the shipwreck of the steamer on Porter Reef, British Columbia, February 13, 1947.

Beard grew up in Portland, Oregon, but spent most of his adult life living in New York City. He championed regional American dishes, and became known as the "Dean of American cookery."

Clement G. Clarke was pastor of the First Congregational Church, Portland, Oregon, 1923-1928. Before coming to Portland, he had been forced to resign from positions in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Peoria, Illinois. Collection consists of typescript carbon copies of newspaper articles from Minneapolis and Peoria, 1911-1915, regarding Clarke's activities as pastor in those communities, and telegrams to the Oregonian, 1926-1928, regarding Clarke's character.
