Abstract

Roscoe Nelson (1879-1937) was a lawyer and businessman. He graduated from Virginia Law School and moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1911. He was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and was active in Jewish societies and civic organizations. Collection includes correspondence; legal papers; Anti-Semitism speeches and articles; Jewish community material; Tualatin Country Club correspondence, rosters, etc.; financial papers; documents relating to Kelly Process, Inc.; and a scrapbook.

George Lemon Newell (1878-1973) was a member of the 14th Infantry, Company F, 1898-1900. Collection includes photocopy documents relating to Newell's military service, 1899-1901; correspondence, primarily to his mother, 1898-1901, regarding his experiences during the Spanish-American War in the Philippines and during the Boxer Rebellion; and a biographical sketch.

Abstract

Papers of Robert Newell (1807-1869), a trapper, emigrant to Oregon, and Indian agent. Includes a typescript copy of Newell's diary of an 1868 voyage from Portland, Oregon, to Washington, D.C., with Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) leaders; handwritten copies of letters regarding William Gray's "History of Oregon"; and Newell's account of the 1843 meeting at Champoeg, which formed the provisional government of the Oregon Territory. Only a small number of the items are original documents.

Materials include photographs of buildings that Doyle designed, correspondence, a combination diary and sketchbook that Doyle kept while traveling in Europe, and biographical and genealogical materials. The collection was compiled by Doyle's granddaughter Marjorie Newhouse (1933-2015).
