Scope and Contents

Collection consists of papers of Charles Samuel Jackson. The papers include correspondence, 1881-1924, regarding Oregon conservation, local and national politics, and the newspaper business; among the correspondents are Woodrow Wilson, William G. McAdoo and Joseph N. Teal. Also included are miscellaneous documents relating to Samuel Hill, Sam Jackson Memorial Park, Northwestern Investment Co., and Golconda Consolidated Gold Mines Co. Other materials include papers of Maria Clopton Jackson, 1929-1951; diary, 1 volume, 1881-1882; title abstracts for land in Multnomah and Clackamas counties; scrapbooks, 1902-1939, for the Journal Publishing Co.; a scrapbook on the dairy industry in Oregon; a Port of Vancouver, Washington, improvement plan, 1 volume, 1918; and eulogies and sympathy letters upon Charles Jackson's death.

Biographical note

Charles Samuel Jackson was born in Virginia in 1860 and arrived in Pendleton, Oregon, in 1880. He bought the East Oregonian newspaper and served as its publisher. Also while living in Pendleton, he met Maria Clopton, and they later married. In 1902, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Charles Jackson took over the Portland Evening Journal newspaper, changed its name to the Oregon Journal, and served as publisher. He died in 1924.
