Correspondence of Portland, Oregon, editorial writer Lawrence K. Hodges. The bulk of the correspondence concerns his book of compiled editorials, "Twenty Eventful Years." This includes correspondence with lawyer Henry Ward Beer of New York about the book's publication and royalties for it. Other correspondence in the collection includes letters concerning fishing, navigation improvements, and power generation on the Columbia River, as well as letter exchanges with Oregon Governor Charles H. Martin and U.S. Senator for Oregon Frederick Steiwer.

Biographical Note

Lawrence Kaye "Larry" Hodges was born in 1857 in Wentworth, England. After working several jobs in Britain, including at a cutlery plant and at a coal and iron company, he immigrated to the United States in 1883. There, he became a reporter for the Pittsburgh Times in Pennsylvania. As a reporter, he covered the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Shortly after the flood, Hodges moved to Seattle, Washington, where he worked for the Post-Intelligencer newspaper. In 1902, he became assistant city editor for the Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Oregon. He became an editorial writer for the Oregonian in 1911, a position he held until 1934. In 1937, he published a collection of his editorials as a book, titled "Twenty Eventful Years." Hodges died in December 1938, shortly before his 81st birthday.
