Multnomah Typographical Union No. 58, Women's Auxiliary No. 233 scrapbooks
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of two scrapbooks of the Multnomah Typographical Union No. 58, Women's Auxiliary No. 233, of Portland, Oregon. One scrapbook, which spans from 1949 to 1963, includes newspaper and newsletter clippings about the auxiliary's activities; clippings about members of Multnomah Typographical Union No. 58; photographs; and ephemera, including an invitation to the meeting at which the auxiliary was formally chartered. The second scrapbook, which was compiled in 1962 and 1963, includes issues of Multnomah Typographical Union No. 58's newsletter, "Doozerdoo"; correspondence, clippings, and ephemera; and a single photograph of the auxiliary's officers. Correspondence in this scrapbook includes form letters urging local businesses to display the Allied Printing Trades Union label; and letters from Oregon state legislators concerning House Bill 1106 during the 1963 legislative session. Some material in both scrapbooks references or relates to the Oregon Journal and Oregonian strike of the late 1950s and early 1960s, as well as to the Portland Reporter, a newspaper published by striking workers. The 1962-1963 scrapbook includes some material relating to the auxiliary's support for Don S. Wilner's campaign for the Oregon Senate. The collection also includes a loose copy of the proceedings of the 55th annual convention of the Woman's International Auxiliary to the International Typographical Union, held in August 1961 in Dallas, Texas.

Historical Note
Although Multnomah Typographical Union No. 58 of Portland, Oregon, had a women's auxiliary as early as 1916, Women's Auxiliary No. 233 was formally organized in October 1949. Its first president was Mercedeth J. Burton (1905-1981). By May 1950, the auxiliary had 118 members. In 1961, the Woman's International Auxiliary to the International Typographical Union sent a certificate of award to Auxiliary No. 233 President Sylvia Brady (1910-2003) for her work.
