Mary F. Slavin notebooks containing diary entries
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of two notebooks that belonged to Mary F. Slavin (later Mary F. Prince) when she was a teenager and then a young woman. The bulk of the first notebook, which bears the date 1868 on its cover, consists of clippings of poems and illustrations; many of the illustrations depict women's fashion, and some appear to have been colored by Slavin. However, this book also includes diary entries that Slavin wrote during a camping trip to the Oregon coast in September 1870; a recipe; and a list of expenses.
The second notebook primarily consists of diary entries from 1874 to 1876. Most of these entries are brief and describe the weather and Slavin's activities, though entries for the first half of August 1875 describe another camping trip to the Oregon coast. The second notebook also includes tallies of wagon loads from Oswego, Oregon, made in 1867; these were likely written by a different person.
