Scope and Contents

The collection consists of financial papers of Charles E. Ladd, a financier who lived in Portland, Oregon, and in Carlton, Oregon. These papers include letters, telegrams, and agreements. Most letters are addressed to Ladd's home in Carlton. The bulk of the collection relates to stock in the Palmer Union Oil Company of San Francisco, California. Other firms represented include the Alaska Galena Company, the Brown-Walker-Simmons Company, the Carlton Consolidated Lumber Company, the Diaz Havana Company, the Hygienic Refrigeration Company, the Midway Oil Company, the Old Mission Portland Cement Company, the Pacific Monthly Company, and the Stratton Oil Company.

Biographical Note

Charles Elliott Ladd was born in 1857 in Portland, Oregon, the son of William Sargent Ladd (1826-1893). He studied at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then at Amherst College, Massachusetts. After graduating from Amherst and marrying Sarah Hall (1860-1927), Ladd returned to Portland and worked at the Ladd & Tilton Bank. He was also president of the Carlton Consolidated Lumber Company and associated with Theodore B. Wilcox in the flour milling business. He had a residence in Portland, Oregon, and a farm home in Carlton, Oregon. Ladd died in 1920.
