Scope and Contents

This collection contains papers of and relating to Joseph L. Meek (1810-1875), including both original materials and copies. The papers include typescript copies of newspaper articles about Meek; a photograph copy of a petition to President James K. Polk, circa 1848, recommending Meek as a U.S. Marshal, and Meek's certificate of appointment as a marshal; various Meek family papers and correspondence, among them a photograph copy of a letter from Meek to J. G. Prentiss, dated July 8, 1848, regarding the Whitman murders; and a photograph copy of a document relating to the execution of the five Cayuse men convicted of the murders. Other materials include two handwritten signal books, circa 1867; an 1882 warranty deed; and a 1904 certificate, featuring Meek, in memory of the men who established the Oregon Provisional Government at the Champoeg meetings in 1843.
