Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a ledger kept by James H. Henderson of Elgin, Oregon. The ledger's entries relate to his work as a furniture dealer, carpenter, and funeral director. There are also a few entries for rental payments. The ledger is organized in alphabetical order by customer surname. The back of the ledger contains loose items from the 1920s, after Henderson had moved to Portland, Oregon; these consist of handwritten calculations, bank receipts, and a Portland Community Chest subscription receipt.

Biographical Note
James Hamlin Henderson was born in 1862 in Macon County, Missouri. He came to La Grande, Oregon, in 1884. In 1892, he married Orpha Pratt (1873-1901). The couple had two sons: Charles Otis Henderson (1893-1910) and Merrill Clarence Henderson (1901-1968). After marrying, the Hendersons lived in Elgin, Oregon, where James H. Henderson worked as a carpenter, a furniture dealer, and a funeral director. In 1919, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he died on January 1, 1959.

Abstract
Ledger kept by James H. Henderson (1862-1959) relating to his work as a furniture dealer, carpenter, and funeral director in Elgin, Oregon, with a small amount of financial ephemera from his later life in Portland, Oregon. Henderson was born in Missouri, and came to La Grande, Oregon, in 1884. He lived in Elgin from the 1890s until 1919, when he moved to Portland.
