The collection consists of nine letters that Paul S. Takata wrote to either Helen C. Scott or to both Scott and her husband, Ralph L. Scott, who had employed Takata at their floral shop in Portland, Oregon. The letters were written after Takata had been called back to Japan in order to serve in the Japanese military. In the letters, which are written in English, Takata describes the weather in Japan, his activities in the army, and his activities after his service. He also inquires about how the Scotts and their family and friends are doing, and asks whether the Scotts will visit him in Japan.

Biographical Note

Paul S. Takata (also known as Siuichi Takata) immigrated to the United States from Japan in the early 20th century. For a time in the 1910s, Takata worked at the Woodmere Floral Company in Portland, Oregon, which Ralph L. Scott (1881-1962) owned from about 1912 to 1917. In 1914, Takata was called back to Japan for military service.
