Oral history interview with Tito Chowdhury
Scope and Contents
Audio recordings of an oral history interview with Tito Chowdhury that was conducted by Sankar Raman and Lisa Cohn in two sessions, on March 12 and March 23, 2020. The second interview session was conducted using Zoom video conferencing software due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but only an audio recording of the session is available in this collection. The interview was recorded for The Immigrant Story, an organization that documents and archives the stories of immigrants and refugees in the United States.
In the first interview session, conducted on March 12, 2020, Chowdhury discusses his family background, and talks about how the 1947 partition of India, which created Pakistan, affected his family. He shares the experiences of his family during the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971. He talks about the importance of education to his family, and about his education in Bangladesh, including his college experience at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He describes how political upheaval in Bangladesh delayed his college education. He briefly talks about his college experience at the University of Texas in Austin, then speaks about working for Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon. He shares his first impressions of Portland, Oregon; talks about his interest in the arts; and discusses his involvement with the Portland Art Museum and its Young at Art program.
In the second interview session, conducted on March 23, 2020, Chowdhury speaks further about how the 1947 partition of India affected his family, and also talks further about his involvement with the Portland Art Museum. He discusses his interest in fashion, and talks about a boy band of which he was briefly a member. He speaks extensively about his involvement with Portland’s Fashion Week and FashioNXT. He closes the interview by talking about his plans for the future, and by sharing his experiences with racism in the United States.

Biographical note
Prasenjit “Tito” Chowdhury was born in Chottogram, Bangladesh, in 1969. He was two years old when the Bangladesh War of Independence started, and his family fled from village to village to escape the violence. He later earned a degree from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and in 1994, he came to the United States to study at the University of Texas in Austin. After he earned his degree in 1996, he began working for Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon. He was involved with the Portland Art Museum’s Young at Art program, and beginning in 2006, he co-produced Portland’s Fashion Week. He left Intel in 2013 to focus on his work with FashioNXT, an annual fashion event held in Portland.
