Historical note
The Deschutes River Scenic Waterway Advisory Task Force was formed in 1980 by the state of Oregon in response to concerns about the increased use of the river by recreational boaters. Members of the task force represented a variety of governmental and private interests. After hearing testimony from three public meetings, the 17 members of the task force presented recommendations on the management of the river to the State Parks and Recreation Division. Among these recommendations were that the state of Oregon should purchase all private property on the Lower Deschutes and that a fee for boaters on the Deschutes should be instituted in lieu of a permit system limiting its use. The group concluded its work in 1982.
