Scope and Contents

Collection consists of four black and white photographs. Two are of Arlie Mitchell, circa 1912; 0ne shows him outdoors, holding a gun, with Mt. Hood in the background, and the other shows him on horseback and holding the lead rope of a pack horse. A third photograph of Mitchell, taken in 1974, shows him next to a replica of the Barlow Road tollgate in Rhododendron, Oregon. The fourth photograph shows Molly Mitchell at the Barlow tollgate, circa 1915. The photographers are unidentified. Along with the photographs, the collection includes photocopied newspaper clippings about the Mitchell family.

Biographical note

Arlie Mitchell was among nine children of Steve and Ellen Mitchell, who raised their family near Sandy, Oregon. The family had a homestead cabin on the Barlow Road, and Steve Mitchell worked maintenance and as tollgate keeper for some time. Arlie Mitchell served as the gatekeeper from 1906 to 1908. He also guided hunting and climbing parties on Mt. Hood. He served in the Navy during World War I and then returned to the Sandy area.
