Arlie Mitchell was among nine children of Steve and Ellen Mitchell; the family had a homestead cabin on the Barlow Road, and Steve Mitchell worked maintenance and as tollgate keeper for some time. Arlie Mitchell served as the gatekeeper from 1906 to 1908, and also guided hunting and climbing parties on Mt. Hood.
