Administrative history
The American Federation of Labor (AFL) formed in 1886 to provide unified representation for trade and craft unions. Within a few years, it gained affiliate trade groups in Portland. The Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) formed in 1935, and the two bodies merged to form the AFL-CIO in 1955; George Meany served as president. The state branch, the Oregon Federation of Labor, held its first convention in 1902, and later formed a governing body, the Oregon State Labor Council. The Oregon Federation of Labor changed its name to Oregon AFL-CIO in 1958. James T. Marr served as executive secretary from 1955-1965.
