Harold F. Wendel papers

 Collection
Identifier: Coll 196

Scope and Contents

Papers of Harold F. Wendel consist of general correspondence; files on the State Sanitary Authority; a file on Wendel's trade mission to Japan; materials related to the University of Oregon; and general biographical materials. Most of the collection relates to Wendel's civic and government activities, with very little on his work as head of the Lipman Wolfe department store. Much of the correspondence is between Wendel and various political figures regarding national and international affairs, including letters to and from Oregon's U.S. senators and representatives, such as Wayne Morse and Edith Green. Also of interest are two photographs of the Lipman Wolfe float in a Portland Rose Festival parade in the late 1920s.

Biographical note

Harold F. Wendel was a businessman and civic leader of Portland, Oregon. From 1927 until his death in 1967, he served as president of the local department store Lipman Wolfe and Co., one of the city's largest. He also gained distinction as a member of the State Sanitary Authority, which he joined in 1939. The authority was charged with monitoring pollution throughout the state, and Wendel was one of the earliest Oregon public figures to champion environmental protection. Wendel was also active in numerous civic organizations and was chosen as Portland's "First Citizen" by the Board of Realtors in 1956. He accompanied a U.S. trade mission to Japan, headed by Under-Secretary of Commerce Walter Williams, in 1958.
