Scope and Contents

Collection includes typescript and photocopied manuscript letters to William P. Bryant, travel documents, and papers relating to his appointment as the first chief justice in the Oregon Territory, 1839-1853, based on originals that David A. Maxwell loaned to the Oregon Historical Society in 1970, and microfilm of the same with additional correspondence and documents. Also included are a photostat biographical article of and typed biographical information about Bryant, and original documents, including a manuscript letter by G. W. Hawkins, Fort Hall, 1 page, September 4, 1849, removing power of attorney from A. L. Lovejoy and granting it to Bryant.

Biographical note

Judge William P. Bryant was appointed the first chief justice of the Oregon Territory by President James K. Polk in 1848, and served until 1850, when he resigned.
