Anna Birchman diary

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 2035

Scope and Contents

The collection includes a manuscript diary of Anna Birchman (nee Anna Björkman, later Anna Birchman Mills), written in Swedish, with entries dating from December 18, 1890-January 14, 1891, as well as two English translations. Birchman wrote the diary in the form of a letter home to her family during her emigration from the Dalarna province in Sweden to Portland, Oregon. The manuscript is a handwritten copy of the original letter, which was received by her family in Sweden. The English translations in the collection consist of a typescript by an unidentified translator, as well as an edited version of that translation in the form of a 2006 pamphlet titled "Winter Crossing: Anna Birchman's 1890 Emigration Narrative," published by Swedish Roots in Oregon. The pamphlet also includes biographical information about Birchman. A preservation photocopy and a microfilm copy of the manuscript diary are also included in the collection.
