Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the papers of Portland, Oregon, attorney and dairy farmer Arthur M. Churchill. The bulk of the collection consists of records from the dairy farm that he operated and correspondence relating to sociopolitical matters and other topics of interest to him. Other materials include papers of Churchill's family, real estate transactions, and law certificates.

Biographical Note

Arthur M. Churchill was born in September 1876 in Marinette, Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and George Washington Law School. After practicing law in Washington, D.C., he moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1911. After retiring from legal practice, Churchill purchased a dairy farm on Puget Island, Washington, which he operated for the rest of his life.

Churchill married Grace M. Walsh in 1921. The couple had three sons: Arthur, Jr., John, and Donald. Churchill was active with the Portland City Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club, and the Portland Committee of Foreign Relations. He also frequently wrote letters to the editor of the Oregonian newspaper, where among other stances, he criticized American aid for Israel and opposed statehood for Hawaii. Churchill died in February 1956.

Papers of Arthur M. Churchill (1876-1956) and his family. Churchill was a lawyer in Portland, Oregon, who later in life operated a dairy farm in southwest Washington state. The papers primarily consist of correspondence about topics in which Churchill took an interest and records of his farm.
