This collection consists of letters that Oliver Jory wrote to his first wife, Ella Jory (nee Hodson), from 1883 to 1907. The correspondence spans the couple's 18-year engagement (1883-1901), and the early years of their marriage. Subjects include the fruit-drying business, crops, the economy, politics, the temperance movement, and personal matters.

Biographical note

Oliver Jory was born in 1859 near Salem, Oregon, and came to Salem at a young age. He worked at his father's firm, H. S. Jory & Son, which manufactured and sold fruit dryers. He was active in the temperance movement, and was the Marion County chair of the Prohibition Party for three terms. In 1901, Jory married Ella Hodson (1861-1919); the couple had three sons, though only one, Lewis, lived to adulthood. After Ella Jory's death, Jory married Phoebe A. Kemp in 1923. Jory died in 1935.
