Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers relating to Raymond W. Gill and his business, Gill Bros. Seed Company. The bulk of Gill Bros. Seed Company materials are seed catalogs. Other materials of note include correspondence between Gill and political figures such as Oregon Governor Walter Pierce; papers relating to the Oregon State Grange; memorials, invitations and awards; a Woman's Auxiliary cookbook; and condolence letters sent to Gill's son-in-law following Gill's death.

Biographical Note

Raymond W. Gill (1882-1963) was born on a farm in the Montavilla District in Portland, Oregon, and lived there for his whole life. In 1910, he and his brother Edward co-founded the Gill Bros. Seed Company. Raymond W. Gill served five terms as Multnomah County representative in the Oregon legislature. He was also a member of the Oregon State Grange and served as grangemaster from 1932 to 1942. Other organizations to which Gill belonged included the Portland Rotary Club, the Eastside Commercial Club, and the Portland Chamber of Commerce.

Historical Note

The Gill Bros. Seed Company was founded by brothers Edward E. and Raymond W. Gill in 1910 in Portland, Oregon. It sold flower and produce seeds. It was acquired by the Joseph Harris Company in the 1960s.
