Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a letter that C. C. McClendon of Deer Creek, Oregon (later Roseburg, Oregon), wrote to his brother and sisters. In the letter, McClendon discusses having recently purchased land. He also discusses the Oregon Constitutional Convention, and how people of the Oregon Territory will vote on whether to accept the constitution and on whether Oregon will allow or prohibit slavery. A note by McClendon's signature indicates that the letter was to be delivered to B. F. McClendon of Elm Spring, Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Christopher Columbus McClendon was born in 1832 in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and came to Oregon in 1852. In 1858, he married Susan Dodson Brown; the couple had 11 children. McClendon died in 1922.
