Scope and Contents

The collection consists of seven letters that Oliver Jory wrote to his wife, Ella Jory, both before and after their marriage in 1901. The letters, all sent from Salem, Oregon, to Marshfield, Oregon, discuss family matters, as well as local events in Salem such as an election and a religious meeting. A letter dated November 22, 1903, discusses the death of two of the Jorys' children. A few letters also mention Oliver Jory's work in the fruit-drying business, and a July 29, 1890, letter is enclosed with an advertisement for a fruit drying machine, the Oregon Fruit Dryer, that Jory's firm patented and sold.

Biographical Note

Oliver Jory was born in 1859 near Salem, Oregon, and came to Salem at a young age. He worked at his father's firm, H. S. Jory & Son, which manufactured and sold fruit dryers. He was active in the temperance movement, and was the Marion County chair of the Prohibition Party for three terms.

In 1901, Jory married Ella Hodson (1861-1919); the couple had three sons, though only one, Lewis, lived to adulthood. After Ella Jory's death, Jory married Phoebe A. Kemp in 1923. Jory died in 1935.
