Burnett's business interests, including a California oil claim; his activities, dismissal and reinstatement as a federal revenue collector and Prohibition enforcement agent, 1918-1933; his life in Yachats after retirement, 1933-1935; his membership in the Knights of Pythias; his service as chief of police for Oregon State Fair, 1915-1916; and miscellaneous other activities.

Biographical note

Marshal Phelps Burnett (1861-1935) was born in Colusa County, California. He came to Oregon with his parents in 1867. He served as Benton County treasurer, 1890-1894; Benton County sheriff, 1900-1908; and federal revenue collector and Prohibition agent, 1918-33. He died in Myrtle Point.

Abstract

Collection consists of papers of Marshal P. Burnett, who came to Oregon with his family in 1867 and later served as Benton County treasurer, as Benton County sheriff, and as a federal revenue collector and Prohibition enforcement agent. Materials include correspondence, certificates, and other papers documenting his business interests; his activities, dismissal and reinstatement as a federal revenue collector and Prohibition agent; his life in Yachats after retirement; his membership in the Knights of Pythias; and other activities.
