Per note with collection: James Winston (1823-1892) arrived in Oregon City from Richmond, Virginia, in 1846 at age 21. He married Mary Johnson, daughter of Rev. Hezekiah Johnson, a pioneer Baptist missionary of 1845.

Manuscript letter from James Winston to his grandson, Louis Dement, written in Chinook Jargon. Winston (1823-1892) arrived in Oregon City from Richmond, Virginia, in 1846 at age 21. He married Mary Johnson, daughter of Rev. Hezekiah Johnson, a pioneer Baptist missionary of 1845.
