Historical Note

The Portland Timbers was first founded as a soccer team in 1975, when the North American Soccer League expanded to Portland, Oregon. The team made it to the championship game of Soccer Bowl '75, where they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Despite initial public enthusiasm, by 1982 attendance figures had fallen significantly, and after that season the franchise folded.

The franchise gained new life in 2001, when Portland became part of the United Soccer Leagues First Division, and took the team name of the Timbers. In 2009, the team was granted an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer on the condition that Portland build a soccer-only stadium; renovation of PGE Park (later Providence Park) to host soccer games was completed in 2011. In December 2015, the Timbers won their first Major League Soccer championship against the Columbus Crew.
