Content Description

The collection consists of mid-20th-century labels for Oregon-based brands of canned and crated produce and canned seafood. The majority of labels are for canned or crated fruit. Brands represented in the labels include Jory Brand and Vita Springs, both packed by United Growers Inc. of Salem; Wagon Train Brand Fine Fruits, packed by the Gordon Green Company of Medford; Pete's Best Brand; Ocean Beauty Tuna, packed by the Portland Fish Company; and the Tillamook Bay Oyster Company.

Historical note

Oregon's climate and geographic location have been advantageous for agriculture and fishing, and the state has had produce and fishing industries since the 19th century. Some of the firms active in packing or canning fruits and vegetables in the 20th century were United Growers Inc. of Salem, the Gordon Green Company of Medford, and Pete's Best Packing Company of The Dalles. Seafood canneries active during the same period included Tillamook Oyster Company of Tillamook, and the Portland Fish Company of Portland.
