Scope and Contents

Correspondence of Joseph Prescott includes two typescript letters from Prescott to his brother, George L. Montague. One is dated January 30, 1854, and discusses life in Oregon City, Oregon; the other is dated May 4, 1854, and regards the explosion of the steamer Gazelle. There are two copies of the May 4 letter, one with handwritten corrections and a handwritten note on at top that reads: "Account of explosion of steamer 'Gazelle.' Original in coll. of Howard Mader, Salem." The collection also includes manuscript letters to Mrs. C. C. P. Betton, Prescott's sister, 1850-1851, discussing family matters and life in Oregon.
