Biographical note
William Sherlock (1817-1901) was born in Ireland. He migrated to Portland, Oregon, where he established a livery business in 1850. His brother Samuel arrived in Portland in the mid-1850s and established a wholesale saddle and harness business. William Sherlock's property investments included 45 acres in northwest Portland. He also at one time owned Swan Island. He was married to Dolly Sherlock, and they had 11 children.
