Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers, photographs, and ephemera of sisters Laura Jenkins Landers and Susie Jenkins Stokes, who both lived in Portland, Oregon, as well as their families. Papers and ephemera include correspondence addressed to both sisters from family members and others; Laura Jenkins Landers' tax returns; a dietary plan prescribed to Landers; Landers' employment service card; and union membership materials of both Susie Jenkins Stokes and her husband, Jessie Stokes. Additional materials include three photographs; a school report for Landers' daughter, Marie January Jenkins; and an obituary and memorial service book for Jessie Stokes.

Biographical Note

Laura Jenkins Landers and Susie Jenkins Stokes were born in Sicily Island, Louisiana, in 1908 and 1915, respectively. The sisters were among Black workers who came to the Portland, Oregon area in the 1940s, and worked in the shipyards during World War II. After the war, they were both domestic workers. Susie Jenkins Stokes' husband was Jessie Stokes (1913-1970). The couple had two children, Eunice and Allen. Laura Jenkins Landers had a daughter, Marie January Jenkins; her marital history is unknown. Both sisters were members of the Vancouver Avenue Baptist Church. Susie Jenkins Stokes died in 2003, and Laura Jenkins Landers died in 2009; the sisters were buried side by side at Rose City Cemetery.
